14 December 2014
The season will be concluded with a magnificent auction of (early) modern and contemporary paintings, watercolors, drawings, sculptures and photography, the catalog of which we are proud to present to you here.
The two paintings are among the earliest works of art by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Lot 14, 'The unloading of the bomb barge', is a very recognizable work by this well-known artist from The Hague because of its beautiful shades of gray, which so clearly depicted the impression of the day. Valuation 25,000 – 35,000.
The other painting by Mesdag, lot 15, on the other hand, is of a larger size and belongs to his romantic oeuvre, characterized by the many shades of gold. Comparable paintings of a setting sun are therefore highly sought after internationally. Valuation € 45,000 – 55,000.
Special are the paintings by the artists of the Bergen School, which come from the estate of the artist Arnoud Colnot. Lot 4, for example, was painted by his good friend Harrie Kuyten and shows you the Damrak in his former hometown of Amsterdam. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.
Lot 17 by Jan Sluijters also depicts simultaneous city life with this 'Portrait of a variety artist'. As one of the most important innovators of Dutch painting in the 20th century, Sluijters used bright colors to portray metropolitan cafes and nightlife in portraits of naked women and high-profile figures from society. This colorist was therefore happy to be inspired by colorful and colorful models, ranging from dandy-like dressed gentlemen to boxers and variety artists. With a beautiful provenance, the valuation for this work is only €15,000 – 20,000.
The works of Geer van Velde are much more modern, of which no fewer than five lots are included in this catalog. Lot 91 is a beautiful 'Composition' in oil on canvas, which proves that this artist belongs to one of the most important abstract-geometric painters of his time. Inspired by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, here too, a palette of nuanced colors has been used in a balanced play of lines and surfaces. Valuation for this important painting € 10,000 – 15,000.
Similar in style and of great international renown is the work by Chafik Abboud, lot 94. This Lebanese artist continued his education in France and worked in the studio of Fernand Léger, among others, through which he switched from classical figurative painting to colorful abstraction. His oriental origin, however, has always remained an important source of inspiration, which is why this painting is so clearly recognizable by his hand. Valuation € 3,000 – 4,000.
You will find three works by the celebrated artist Keith Sonnier, of which lot 140 'Flocked wall' is a very striking piece. The more than 4.5 meters wide object made of latex, pigment and fabric fiber must be attached to the wall, with the tension cords entering the room. As a result, the work floats and crosses the boundary between painting and sculpture: a technique that was groundbreaking in the 1960s. Once part of the progressive Helga & Walther Lauffs collection, it is now offered to you with a valuation of €4,000 – 6,000.
Among the sculptures you will find important makers such as Lika Mutal, Eppe de Haan, Salvador Dalí and Kees Verkade. Two 'babies' by Carolein Smit are included, both very meticulously detailed and colorfully decorated. These innocent ceramic creatures with real human traits ensured Smit's breakthrough with the general public. Valuations € 1,500 – 2,000 / 2,000 – 2,500.
This auction also contains various photographic works, including lot 183 by Hendrik Kerstens. This 'Beaver hat' from 2009 depicts his daughter Paula, but is reminiscent of Johannes Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. The sober, clear image of a young woman at the beginning of her adult life and above all the characteristic Dutch light are central to the work of both artists. Valuation for this contemporary 17th century portrait € 4,000 – 6,000.
Lot 191 and 192 by iconic photographer Govert de Roos, which were used for the Museum Night campaign 'Art Sells' from 2014, are controversial. These photos will be auctioned together with the similar campaign poster, now a collector's item. Valuation € 2,000 – 3,000 each.
