We invite you to visit the viewing days of this upcoming auction, consisting of more than 100 paintings, watercolors and drawings. These works vary in age from the 16th to early 20th century and have all been selected for their art-historical or highly decorative value.
The catalog starts with a number of special Old Masters, of which lot 8 immediately catches the eye. This panoramic 'Beach view' was attributed to Simon de Vlieger and was also auctioned as such at Frederik Muller in Amsterdam in 1902. The painting with the imposing ships and upholstery has since been part of a distinguished private collection. The valuation of this impressive work of more than one meter wide is € 20,000 – 30,000.
The subsequent lot 9 is by Karel van Mander I and concerns a special rosaille depicting 'Moses knocks water out of the rock'. The work dated about 1590 has been included in the literature and gives a beautiful picture of the skill of this artist. Valuation € 8,000 – 12,000.
Lot 10 consists of no fewer than four 17th century paintings, all made after the well-known works by Adriaen van de Venne. These sought-after early copies are all titled in a banderole at the top and bear the proverbs: 'Poverty' soeckt list', 'Rijckdom soeckt opulence', 'Weelde soeckt misery' and 'Ellend' soeckt de doot'. The valuation for these four with an important provenance is € 8,000 – 12,000.
Romanticism is amply represented by well-known artists such as Pieter Lodewijk Francisco Kluijver, Pieter Cornelis Dommersen, Andreas Schelfhout and various scions Koekkoek and Hulk. The magnificent painting 'View of the Herengracht, Amsterdam' is by an 'unknown master' from the same period. This lot 52 shows the Huis de Vicq, located at Herengracht 476, one of the most beautiful places in our capital. For the view of this 'Golden Bend', the appraised value is € 4,000 – 6,000.
We offer lovers of animal paintings plenty of choice. In addition to the works by Albertus Verhoesen, Constant Artz and Otto Eerelman, two paintings by Henriette Ronner-Knip are also on offer. Lot 36, 'Loss of jewels', is an excellent example of her playful oeuvre. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.
You will find lot 79 by the Larense Scholer Anton Mauve, a large-sized painting depicting the 'Shepherd with his flock'. This subject not only won him a gold medal at the Paris Salon, it brought him international success that reached as far as the United States. Valuation € 15,000 – 20,000.
The two paintings by Joseph Bles, on the other hand, are extremely Hague-like, which depict a beautiful time image of elegant companies among 'the fishermen' on the beach. Bles was inspired for this lot 45 by the famous 'bomschuiten on the beach in Scheveningen', a term that has since been adopted internationally. Valuation for the two works together is € 2,000 – 3,000.
Among the foreign artists you will find lot 89 by the French landscape painter Paul Madeline. 'La baie du Diben' once again proves the strength of this impressionist and confirms his presence in many museum collections. Valuation for this beautiful painting € 3,000 – 5,000.
We have no fewer than three lots by Martin Monnickendam in this auction. Lot 96, which depicts the 'Italian Opera Rehearsal' from 1929, is extremely charming and very characteristic of his hand. Like his teacher August Allebé, he liked to paint the audience who watched performances attentively. This at the time still very unknown subject soon brought Monnickendam the necessary attention and fame. Valuation € 8,000 – 10,000.
In addition to the many paintings, this catalog also contains various works on paper. Lot 95 is an extremely tasty pastel by Willy Sluiter of one of his favorite subjects: 'Concours Hippique'. Like his well-known images of the horse race, this work is drawn very quickly, smoothly and colorfully and is offered to you with the attractive valuation of € 3,500 – 4,500.
Another example is the watercolor by Louis Apol, lot 58. This 'Winter Landscape with Mills' was made in the artist's favorite technique and is one of his largest works on paper. Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000.
The auction will conclude with 'La Grande Galerie, Musée du Louvre' by Georges d'Espagnat, an artist mentioned in the same breath as other great masters of Post-Impressionism. The painting gives a good idea of the 1930s in elegant Paris and is included with a valuation of only €10,000 – 15,000.
