433 - Modern & Contemporary Art

16 June 2013

Also this spring we offer you a wide range of Modern & Contemporary art. The auction, on Monday 17 June, contains no fewer than 155 works by national and international renowned artists. The catalog leads you from The Hague School to Bergen School and then from Pop Art to Nul Movement, CoBrA and Realism. The collection has been supplemented with a series of photography and special sculptures.

We start the auction with a beautiful portrait by Karel Wiggers, entitled 'Child with a yellow hat and flowers in the hand'. The panel, once purchased at Galerie Van der Vlist in Leiden in 1975, is an extremely refined oval work, which contains all the typical 'Wiggers' elements. Valuation € 2,000 – 3,000.

No fewer than three paintings by Ferry Slebe have also been included, of which lot 2, 'Homage to Van Dongen', is the most striking. This extremely colorful elegant lady with bare chest is indeed reminiscent of the 1920s in a contemporary setting. Valuation € 1,500 – 2,000.

Lot 6 was painted by Herman Berserik and titled 'Badstrand'. The 1962 painting features an original frame and shows his most beloved subject. Valuation € 4,000 – 5,000.

The seven works by Jan van Heel are intriguing, all from an impressive private collection. Despite the fact that these are each very typical of his hand, they also show the development of the master over 30 years. The largest painting is lot 11, 'Terra Roja, village in Spain' from 1966, which leaves a stunning impression with its size of over 120 x 100 cm. Valuation € 2,000 – 3,000.

The last Hague Scholer in this auction is Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, represented with lot 18. 'Glass with flowers' is dated 1947 and three years later it graced the exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden. Valuation € 1,000 – 2,000.

The Bergen School is represented by three of its most prominent members, namely Arnout Colnot, Dirk Filarski and Jan Altink. Lot 30 of the latter, 'Summer landscape', is a beautiful canvas from the special collection of Prof. Dr. WH Brummelkamp and Mrs. HE Brummelkamp-van Joost. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.

In this auction we offer you no less than two works by Gerrit Benner, the first of which, lot 31, shows a 'Strand'. The work, made in the late 1970s, shows the artist's skill through the almost simple and smooth brushstrokes on the paper, which actually create an extensive landscape. Valuation € 7,500 – 9,000.

The other work, depicting 'Blue Horses', was already painted in 1954 in oil on paper. The six horses seem to dance around each other and, despite their gracefulness, still have strong geometric shapes. Valuation € 10,000 – 15,000.

Lot 33, the 'Woman's Head' by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman is special. This 1941 template was obtained by the current owner from the Piet & Ida Sanders collection, who in turn acquired it from the artist's family. The pictured one represents Fie Werkman, the artist's daughter, and was shown in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1945. Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000.

By Jan Sluijters is lot 34, depicting a 'Portrait of an elegant woman'. The person portrayed was a dear friend of the artist, which is also apparent from the extremely graceful way in which she is depicted. She wears a handsome robe, many jewels and a distinguished hat and she looks into the room with a mischievous look. The painting is dated 1952, less than five years before the painter's death. Only later did correspondence show how dear their friendship had become and how pleased the portrayed was that she and her daughter were being immortalized on canvas. Valuation € 9,000 – 12,000.

In addition to the many paintings and watercolors, you will also find various works in circulation in this catalog. The four editions by Kees van Dongen are very affordable, all equally decorative and feminine. Lot 43 was issued as an advertising supplement to Les Feuillets d'Art in 1920. The 'Rimmel' pictured here is still a popular cosmetic brand. Valuation € 1,500 – 2,500.

You will find no fewer than 3 lots by Roy Lichtenstein, all signed and in good condition. The first, the cover lot, is the highly sought-after 'Shipboard Girl' from 1965. Purchased by a Spanish collector at Christie's New York in 2006, the lithograph, lot 45, has now found its way to Amsterdam. Valuation € 10,000 – 15,000.

For the royalist among you lot 48 is a must to purchase. Our former Queen, Princess Beatrix, was memorably captured by Andy Warhol in 1985. This 'Reigning Queen' is signed and numbered 40/40 and comes from a beautiful company collection. Valuation € 10,000 – 15,000.

Marlene Dumas is not called the Netherlands' best export product for nothing. Despite being born in South Africa, she has been living in the Netherlands for so long that we have come to regard her as Dutch. Lot 52, 'Being Held', is a very typical work by her hand due to the washed ink technique and is dated 1989. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.

Various photos are offered in this auction. We offer you works by Pépé Smit, Daniëlle Kwaaitaal, Govert de Roos, Ira Vinokurova and Jasper de Beijer. Impressive is the 'older' photography by, for example, Michael Joseph. This good friend of the Rolling Stones made the cover of the album Beggars Banquet in 1968, of which we offer you not only the original photo but also the contact sheet of this shoot. In the cover photo, lot 57, the Stones are seated at a banquet in bum clothes, surrounded by a dog and some cats; a literal interpretation of the album title. Valuation € 1,000 – 2,000.

The unique sculpture by Karel Zijlstra, lot 70, in bronze on a hard stone base is exciting. This 'Reflection' dates from 1998 and shows the contrasts that this artist always struggles with. Valuation € 2,000 – 3,000.

Three works by Aart Lamberts are included, of which lot 74, 'Watchmen', is the earliest work. Lamberts created this bronze at the age of 30 and has always continued his work in the same style. Valuation € 3,500 – 4,500.

We are delighted with the two sculptures by Arthur Spronken, lot 83 and 84. The dynamics of these horses are characteristic, in which the legs are only visible at the start and the movement only takes place in the torso. Despite the difference in size, both have the same outspoken attitude and this explains the (inter)national popularity of Spronken's oeuvre. Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000 / € 5,000 – 8,000.

Two early works by Bram Bogart will also be auctioned, both from the collection of the former director of the Rotterdamse Bank in Delft, who obtained the works from the artist himself. The 'Still Life', lot 100, dates from ca. 1951 and has the original frame. The recently deceased artist still used the same pasty material paint on burlap as his favorite material 50 years later. Valuation €10,000 – €15,000.

Lovers of large paintings can indulge in lot 110, by Cole Morgan. This 'Acrobat 3' from 1993 is a very elaborate example of his oeuvre; the many details were added to the work over a period of time, until Morgan felt satisfied and this project was completed. Valuation € 6,000 – € 10,000.

A Dutch name that cannot be missed in an auction like this is Herman Brood. Lot 111, the first of two works, consists of four wooden panels which were placed as construction panels for the renovation of the Escape disco on Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam. Brood painted these to create a lively atmosphere in the construction site of the place he loved to visit. 'Sky king' shows an animated scene of dancing people and a horse in Amsterdam's nightlife scene. Valuation € 3,000 – € 5,000.

The same cartoonish approach to life is depicted in the three works by Anton Martineau. His largest work, lot 115, shows 'The painter and his model' from 1979 and comes from Galerie Willy Schoots in Eindhoven. Valuation € 1,500 – € 2,500.

Coming from a family estate are lots 137 – 139 by Jan Jordens, made in the last years of his life, after he had broken up with his fellow artists of De Ploeg. Visible is the personal path that the artist now decided to follow, where he withdrew from the unconsciously imposed communal ideas and these compositions in earth colors can certainly be called exciting. Valuations € 1,000 – € 2,000.

We hope to welcome you in our saleroom soon!
