429 - The Spring Sale

The new auction season will start on Monday 25 March with this all-round auction, entitled The Spring Sale. This auction contains no fewer than 486 lots, all selected for their qualitative, but also decorative value. In this catalog you will not only find antiques, including silver, jewellery, porcelain, earthenware, clocks, watches, sculptures, furniture, candlesticks and Asian items, but also paintings, watercolors, drawings & graphics.

 

This time, for example, you will find an impressive first-grade serving tray from 1807 – 1809. It bears the master's mark of the Amsterdam silversmith Diederik Willem Rethmeyer and weighs no less than 2661 grams. The oval leaf has an openwork raised edge with pointed arches, bars and egg frames. Valuation € 1,500 – 2,000.

A similar estimate has a silver puff basket, also from Amsterdam, by the hand of Diederik Lodewijk Bennewitz. This beautiful handle basket bears the year letter Q for 1825, and weighs approximately 1508 grams.

The highlight of this section is the charming silver snuff box with a portrait miniature behind glass on the inside of the lid. Marked Amsterdam 1743 and with master stamp by Jean Soumain, this object is valued at € 2,500 – 4,000.

Among the jewels you will find various watches, of which the Breitling Chronomat from 1997 stands out in particular. Not only do the 44 brilliants in the lunette sparkle towards you, the whole is decorated with an 18K gold band. Valuation € 12,000 – 15,000.

For the ladies, various rings, necklaces and bracelets are part of the collection, but also two impressive brooches. Lot 14 in particular is an ingenious design made around 1920. This Art Deco double clip brooch, studded with the most beautiful diamonds, can be worn as a whole, but can also decorate your suit in two parts. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.

A longcase watch in burr walnut case, signed Allin Walker, Amsterdam, from about 1750 has a valuation of € 4,500 – 5,500. With full calendar, anchor escapement, a bronze cylinder with twelve melodies and a carillon on ten bells.

Rare is the North Holland chair hen, equipped with a very well carved large back shelf, openwork in flower sprays and crowned by a crowned shield. The clock was made in the 17th century and carries a bell on which Atlas. Valuation for this special chair clock is € 7,000 – 8,000.

Made from the nowadays very rare and forbidden Rio rosewood is a beautiful Dutch cabinet, manufactured around 1750. The contrasting colors of this special type of wood make this cabinet a real eye-catcher, partly because of the very well executed carving and the balanced proportions. In the middle of the eighteenth century this must have been an extremely valuable piece of furniture, now it is valued at € 3,000 – 5,000.

Unmistakably French is the pair of late 18th century three-light candlesticks. Made of bronze, gilt bronze and white marble and depicting a standing Moor. In front of the chest a cornucopia, in which three flower-shaped candlesticks, the whole on a marble base, decorated with fire-gilded garlands. This charming couple has an estimate of $6,000 – 8,000.

The pair of 18th century flintlock rifles, marked JC Niquet a Liege, has a valuation of € 1,200 – 1,800.

A rare colored map of the Demarary River in the then colonial Suriname is dated 1756 and shows us, in addition to the actual map, also an extensive list of the plantations present at the time and their respective owners. Valuation € 3,000 – 4,000.

A pair of polychrome wood carvings in high relief depicting two ladies in classical dress, possibly depicting Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Both hold a globe in front of them and carry an oval shield on which a bundle of sheaves of wheat. With traces of the original gilding and polychrome and a height of 125 cm, probably from the early 18th century, once bought in England and now up for auction with a valuation of €2,000 – 4,000.

You will find a well-modelled terracotta portrait bust by Jhr G. van Brienen van de Grootelindt by the well-known sculptor Charlotte van Pallandt. The valuation for this striking, 33 cm high head is € 1,600 – 2,000.

The bronze statue by the South African sculptor Anton van Wouw is very rare and of high quality. Pictured is a young, standing woman in South African dress. On the pedestal the engraved statement: 'Die Noitje van die onderveld Transvaal Rustenburg sijn distrikt'. The estimate for this charming 42 cm high statue is € 6,000 – 8,000.

A high-quality oak statue of Saint Barbara can be dated around 1500 and may have been made in the Southern Netherlands. The valuation of this very expressive, well-carved statue is €5,000 – 6,000.

For tile lovers, there is a charming tile tableau from the late 18th century, from Harlingen. It shows a well-painted bouquet over sixteen tiles in blue and white. Estimate for this attractive tableau is €1,500 – 2,000.

Also from Friesland are two tile pictures with an image of a birdcage, one in purple against a white background, the other multi-coloured. Coming from the 19th century and valued at € 1,200 – 1,500.

Under the porcelain you will find a beautiful Wanli raak porcelain dish with a diameter of 47 cm and a decoration of birds in a tree. Valuation € 3,000 – 4,000.

But also a series of six Kangxi plates with ribbed rim and seal mark, valued at € 1,200 – 1,500.

From the Kangxi period you will find a series of three blue and white vases, marked 'aiye'. Estimated € 2,000 – 3,000.

Impressive is the very large fishbowl, with a diameter of no less than 53 cm and a decor in blue and white of five dragons chasing a flying pearl, estimated at a value of € 2,000 – 3,000.

For lovers of Japanese prints there is a lot with nine woodcuts. Six pieces are by Toyokuni III, (1786 – 1864) and two by Utamaro, (1753 – 1806). All are neatly framed and together adorn the cover of the catalog. Valuation € 1,500 – 2,500.

The first part of a special and very extensive collection of Japanese teaware will be offered in this auction. The various tea bowls and tea canisters, often with the original boxes, are offered in many varieties. For example, several are decorated with the 'hazevel' and 'oil spot' decors known among collectors. An absolute must for anyone interested in the so refined Japanese tea ceremony.

An early bronze bell from the 13th century comes from East Java. This beautiful clock, topped by a mythical lion rampant, was part of the collection of the late Mr HP Bremmer. A comparable copy can be found in the book 'Divine Bronze, Ancient Indonesian bronzes' on p. 124, under no. 72. Valuation € 2,000 – 3,000.

An important golden sultan kris from Malaysia is decorated with leaf and floral motifs. Made in the 18th/19th century and family owned for a long time, this superb collector's item is valued at just €5,000 – 6,000.

 

The auction will end with a very extensive collection of paintings, watercolors, drawings and graphics. The 280 lots are arranged in alphabetical order by artist and the catalog thus leads you from Pierre Alechinsky to Bert van Zelm. Because the works were made between the 18th and 21st century, you will be given a good picture of the developments in art history of the last 300 years.

More than half of all artworks are auctioned with no reserve price. You can recognize this by the valuation € 1 – 1.
