From the beginning of June we will organize five auctions. The first of these is the semi-annual Modern & Contemporary Art auction. We proudly present you an exclusive, very varied offer. The catalog takes you from works from the early 20th century to objects of very recent manufacture.
The auction starts with an impressive collection of prints by Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman. The 23 stencilled editions are in excellent condition and provide a nice overview of his progressive printing from the Second World War. (Valuation € 800 – 1,500)
International prints include 'Sunrise' from 1965 by Roy Lichtenstein, as well as 'Five Paint Brushes' from 1973 by Jim Dine. One of the highlights is 'La femme au armchair' by Pablo Picasso. This color lithograph from 1947 is signed in red and appeared at the time in a limited edition of 50 pieces. (Valuation € 10,000 – 15,000)
Various works by CoBrA artists will also be offered. Besides Karel Appel, Carl-Henning Pedersen and Corneille, you will find a rare painting on canvas by Lucebert. With the title 'She who was once beautiful', this artist shows his modern vision and his powerful palette. This work and several others come from the collection of Mr and Mrs Poelstra-Nanninga, two passionate collectors, who built up a high-quality collection from the mid-1970s. (Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000)
Works by Pieter Defesche, Gerrit Benner and Eugène Brands, among others, lead the way to the impressive painting 'Paysage au voyeur' by Maurice Wyckaert. The very typical use of color in combination with the smooth technique make this beloved subject of his hand one of the masterpieces in the collection. (Valuation € 5,000 – 8,000)
By the hand of Edgar Fernhout 'Landscape with two trees' from 1943 comes under the hammer. The large format work has international allure due to the photographic refinement with which nature is depicted. (Valuation € 6.500 – 8.500)
For lovers of early 20th century topographical works, we offer you 'View of the Kuhrhaus in Scheveningen' by Cor Noltee, 'View of the Montelbaanstoren' by Jan Knikker Jr., 'Boulevard in Ostend' by Frans Smeers and 'Brouwershaven' by Dirk Hidde Nijland.
The panel by Jozef Israels, entitled 'Vislopers in Zandvoort', dates from the same period. This is a work of great quality and of impressive provenance. The coastal views by Israels have always been very popular for their attractive use of color and the realistic depiction of their time. This painting shows young fish walkers, still children, who traveled long distances every day, packed with many kilos of fish. They received these on the beach, after which they traveled from house to house, usually barefoot, in order to sell the catch. (Valuation € 6,000 – 10,000)
Light, open landscapes can be found in this auction by Co Breman, but also by Dirk Smorenberg. Two paintings of the latter have even been included. Both show the subject for which the artist is so famous; 'Water lilies in the Loosdrechtse Plassen'.
The Hague School will also be well represented. The work is titled 'Scheepje aan de Schelde' by Herman Berserik. What is special about this object, once purchased from Kunsthandel ML de Boer, is that it is accompanied by the ship model depicted. As is not usual with Berserik, this work is provided with a beautiful handwritten label.
Nor is a portrait by Karel Wiggers unimportant. This child in the orange hat shows the figurative power in the naive realism of this master. (Valuation € 3,000 – 4,000)
The auction will end with five works by Willem Hussem, made in his strongest period, between 1954 and 1970.
For lovers of large objects, we offer you the painting 'Perséphone, le retour du printemps' by Alphons Freijmuth. The still active artist made this painting of two and a half meters wide in 1998. (Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000)
By the hand of Herman Brood, there is the work 'He found happiness in fatherhood' from 1987, measuring more than 450 cm wide, consisting of three painted canvases. Brood made this mural on the occasion of the reopening of the sound recording studio of Stichting Popmuziek Nederland, at 214 Wibautstraat in Amsterdam. (Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000)
An artist who cannot be missed in an auction like this is the always passionate Theo Mackaay. In this catalog you will find six sculptures by him, varying in size and subject.
Various photographers are represented under contemporary art, including Dutch pride Desirée Dolron and Ruud van Empel, as well as emerging Belgian photographer Spank Moons.
Lucio Fontana's work 'Concetto spaziale'; perforated silver paper with ballpoint pen. (Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000)
Armando is represented with two recognizable paintings, 'Landschaft' and 'Die Leiter'. Both show the combination of old sadness as opposed to renewal. The artist, who has become so famous for his guilty landscape, continues that subject in these works as well.
Various works by the recently deceased artists Bram Bogart, Ger Lataster and JCJ Vanderheyden will be auctioned. The paintings reflect the development of these artists over the years. The work by Vanderheyden graces the cover of the catalog, paying tribute to this important Dutch artist.
