410 - The European Interior & a collection of Clocks and Watches

12 December 2011

On Monday 12 December, AAG will once again traditionally close the season with a large, high-quality arts and crafts auction under the name The European Interior. In this auction you will not only find a large collection of desirable objects, including engraved glasses and Delft pottery from the estate of the recently deceased Amsterdam antique dealer Henk van Vliet, clock lovers will also be well catered for. Partly under the auspices of the well-known expert Jaap Zeeman, an important collection of longcase clocks, mantel clocks, watches and the like was put together, which we are proud to present to you.
The highlight of the clock collection is a grandfather clock dating around 1685, signed Willem Bramer in Zwolle. Valuation for this extremely important timepiece in ebony veneer case: € 25,000 – 30,000.
The interest in Chinese terracotta teapots is currently very high and we are therefore pleased to be able to offer you a collection of them. We name a few:
A beautiful Yixing teapot, 9 cm high, decorated with ascending lotus flowers and Buddhist motifs is valued at € 2,000 – 3,000.
A beautiful, 16 cm high Yixing teapot, this time with peaches, characters and a stylized dragon has a value of € 8,000 – 10,000.
A Qianlong, Chine de Commande tea service part with the arms of the Swarth and van Tecklenburg families was made on the occasion of the wedding of Jacobus Swart and Anna Maria van Tecklenburg in November 1754. The service is mentioned in Kroes' standard work 'Chinese armorial porcelain for the Dutch market', pages 418 – 420 and is valued at €1,500 – 2,000.
Extremely Refined is an album made in China in 1929 with various insect prints. It is made by Qi Bai Shi, (1864 – 1957), bears the seal mark Laobai and has a wooden, textile-covered cover. Each print measures 15 x 20 cm. Estimate: €800 – 1,000.
An album of ten landscape prints by the Chinese artist Fu Bao Shi, (1904 – 1965) is dated 1945 and valued at € 3,000 – 4,000.
An imposing Lonquan Celadon yen yen vase from the Ming dynasty is 48 cm high and has a valuation of € 2,500 – 3,500. This vase comes from the collection of Mr W. Ariëns in The Hague.
A special Chinese wooden table screen with an oval jade plaque can be dated around 1900. The plaque depicts a lotus pond with cranes and figures on a porch. Estimate: €3,000 – 4,000.
In the midst of various lots of Delft pottery you will find, among other things, a very decorative wall plaque with an ice view in the 17th century style. The plaque is marked Pieter van Marksveld, owner of plateelbakkerij De Greek A from 1796 to 1811. Valuation € 1,800 – 2,000.
Also from the Greek A, but this time marked Pieter Kocx, (1686 – 1701) is an important faience candlestick. Entirely after Chinese, Kangxi example, including vertical strings of pseudo Chinese characters. Target price € 1,200 – 1,500.
An exceptional Delft blue teapot of a rare flat model can be dated around 1700. Valuation € 1,800 – 2,000.
A 52 cm high Delft knob vase from the early 18th century bears a continuous Chinoiserie decor of figures in a landscape. Estimate for this octagonal and spherical vase: €1,100 – 1,500.
A beautiful Delft coat of arms shows the family coat of arms of Van Hoekke and also the year 1719. To the right of the coat of arms a standing Mercury with below a banderole with name and year. Beautifully painted in gold, green, red and black, baked in 'the small fire', in this auction with a valuation of € 1,800 – 2,200.
A meticulously painted 'verre eglomisé' or glass painting on the back, signed and dated KJ Weygand, 1806, shows us a distinctly Dutch scene with rowers in a canal behind a dike with a mill and various other buildings. Painted in silver and black with a sky in pink and blue, in original frame. Auctioned at Sotheby's Amsterdam on November 21, 1989, now in this auction with a valuation of €1,800 – 2,200.
One of the most curious lots in the auction is an oval portrait miniature of the Zwolle professor and rector JP van Medenbach Wakker. We see this professor depicted en-face, seated in front of his bookcase while his left hand rests around the foot of a pewter funeral urn with an S on it. According to the inscription on the back, this S refers to the deceased wife of Wakker, a Mrs Sarissen. In original brass frame and dated 1802. Valuation € 800 – 1,200.
Another portrait miniature shows us a man pointing with his right hand, a drawing of a garden design in the right hand. Estimate for this curious portrait: € 1,000 – 1,500.

A special occasion glass with the engraved coat of arms of Prince William IV on the chalice, with the Dutch virgin with staff and freedom hat on the other side, surrounded by the arms of the Seven Provinces, is estimated at € 1,200-1,800.
